Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoon) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) or heat a heavy skillet over high heat.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions, shaping each portion into a ball.
  7. Roll each ball into a flat circle about ¼ inch thick.
  8. Bake the pita bread for about 5-7 minutes or until puffed and lightly browned.
  9. Remove from the oven, and cover with a clean towel to keep warm.

Notes

For best results, ensure your oven is hot enough. You can use a baking tray or a heavy skillet if you don’t have a pizza stone.
